US: jobless claims fall
by Barbora Misakova

It is only September and I am listening to “I am dreaming of a white Christmas”. Older I am, more I look forward to this unique time of a season. Glittering Christmas tree, plenty of gifts under it and full house – that is the picture I am carrying in my head whole year. But is there really a reason for joy? For those ones with no job and income any sight of Christmas must be depressing. But there is still a hope, at least for those who live in the US. Hope for recovery of its economy is higher. According to Thursday’s news, new unemployment benefit claims fell to a two-month low. Also the trade deficit for July shrank by 14 percent, what is a hopefu! l sign for the stuttering economic recovery. David Sloan, an economist at 4CAST in New York said: “We were expecting that things would slow down in the third quarter and start to pick up in the fourth quarter, but now it seems like the slowdown in the third quarter wasn’t as severe as we feared.” While market expectations for state unemployment benefits were hovering around 470,000, drop of 27,000 was a pleasant surprise for the Labor Department. Together with the $4.5 billion trade deficit shrank, the Thursday’s report helped to calm fears a little bit. Great news is that private employers added 67,000 jobs in August, while prior month’s numbers were revised to show 36,000 more jobs created than previously reported. Well, maybe this year’s Christmas will be afterward white for everyone!
