Shares rise on Wall Street
by Zivka Deleva

The stocks’ value have risen yesterday, due to the latecomers companies that decided to buy at the last few days of September. With no doubt, this month can be easily pronounced as the worst in the history of the Wall Street. The famous index S&P 500 has risen 9.4 percent. This is the month of spending cash. People are more and more aggressive as the quarter comes, say financial strategists. Other indexes have also been increased. It happened to Philadelphia semiconductor index that changed for 1.7 percent and Russell 2000 rose for 1.1 percent. The Nasdaq Composite Index grew for 9.82 points and the Dow – for 8.4 percent for the month. Some companies though h! ave reported to be very profitable this month. For instance, Walgreen Co, which is the biggest drugstore chain in the United States of America, have noted very high earnings, a lot more then they had dreamt of. Apple Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co. have also lost about 5.6 of the share’s value. It seems like it is a modern thing to change your chief executive when something is wrong, or maybe that is the right thing to be done. If you come from a country where responsibility is almost a noun that doesn’t exist, then it would be strange for you. But, I suppose in the “normal” ones, it is normal. Some analysts say that the technology sector has obviously gone too far. After five months of sticking to the middle of the line, technology companies have made it to attract consumers more. Let’s wait and see how will the quarter finish and what would it bring to the next one.

Why so much attention?
by Barbora Misakova

I’ve just had a déjà vu. I have seen a picture of post-crisis era, when everything is getting back into the groove and people are slowly calming down. But suddenly some terrible and falling numbers have appeared and swept it all away. Is this situation familiar to you? I would bet it is. We have been hearing about optimistic numbers and healing economy for two years now, but nothing has actually happened yet. It is like we were in some kind of whirl which lets us to see potential recovery, but it never lets us to touch it. As Reuters informed, U.S. consumers’ confidence fell to its lowest level in seven months. Unemployment rate is at 9.6 percent and t! ogether with tight access to credit it keeps concerns about a double-dip recession alive. According to Kathy Lien, director of currency research at GFT in New York, “decline in sentiment will give the Fed a stronger reason to increase stimulus in November.” If that wouldn’t be enough – U.S. Business Roundtable survey found that there is even less CEOs who expect their companies’ sales to rise. This CEO Economic Outlook Index declined from 94.6 to 86. But it is not only Fed who is prepared to put more money into the economy to stimulate its recovery. Also President Barack Obama tries to help. He signed a $30 billion small business lending bill into law on Monday and tries to persuade voters to be more enthusiastic, as November U.S. congressional elections are coming. Maybe less attention and not that many surveys could help confidence to rise again…

Inflation or deflation?
by Milota Sidorova

Although it seems to be rough when it comes to the U.S. economy – considering FED reports about „not rising up from recession“, unemployment and still above average level industry, something strange is happening there right now. While steps beating inflation possibly made impact, the current rate of inflation remains under exected level and makes 1.4 percent. As cited according to FED this number is under its „comfortable inflation level“ that makes around 1.7-2.0 percent. And though it may be bit early to speak about the opposite trend, some analysts see it as upcoming deflation. But are there reasons for thinking about deflation? Crops in se! veral, though the most important global producers went down and for example Russia banished selling its own wheat abroad. That makes stress on prices of food which are expected to rise up. Russia is not the only one having miserable crops this summer, the same trend have hit also Europe. Also oul prices are expected to grow and since the oil is present in almost every step of production, the prices will definitely rise. So why are American analysts speaking of deflation? Most of them see it as a natural consequence of consumers´ habits. People have become „price sensible“ and the demand went down for a while. That made the prices going down, but actually some companies and commodities went up. For example Starbucks and Budweisser are currently rising prices and some more important corporations have the same intentions The latest inflation projection was around 2.2 percent. Fed however, said it was too early to rely on analysts´ reports and focus more ! on real data on consumer spending.

US problem with China currency
by Zivka Deleva

The United States of America are working on the lobbying among the twenty countries that are gathering at the next Summit that will be held in South Korea at the November 11-12. The Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner created a bigger campaign how to persuade the other friends from the group to put bigger pressure on Beijing policy and its strong currency. The pressure came from US lawmakers that wanted to force their most important financial institution to put some efforts to make China’s economics weaker. But, everybody is wandering whether US are going to succeed in the plan, because as euro zone countries declare, it seems like US are solo in game. And you can! 217;t fight a game when you are on your own. It seems like US should protect their dollar with their own forces and knowledge and not to look for a help all the time. But even once superior States are no longer so powerful to come through things on their own, so they call for help. One thing is for sure, the United States of America is going to have the bigger advantage with the weaker Yuan. China’s Yuan was anyhow put to be a topic at the meeting. It was suggested by South Korean Finance Minister Yoon Jeung-hyun. The issue of the exchange rates was going to be the most important issue on the Forum. "But aside from that, I do not believe that it is appropriate to have a discussion regarding the foreign exchange rate or level of a specific country" - Yoon said in an interview with Reuters. The problem came when in June, when China central bank announced that their currency was going to fluctuate easily, rising 1.8 percent.

God helps those who help themselves?
by Barbora Misakova

Well, well, I wouldn’t like to be in Papandreou’s shoes. While Greece is in the worst financial troubles in its history, people are putting up resistance to austerity measures and Greek government has a lot to do with the series of strikes that hit the country. Greek Prime Minister Papandreou does his best to defend debt measures and rules out restructuring. “The logic of restructuring the debt would be catastrophic for the economy, for our credibility, for our future.” he said at a press conference in Thessaloniki on Saturday. Also Jorgos Papaconstantinu, the Secretary of the Treasury has pledged not to restructure Greek’s debts. However analy! sts point out the country is due to austerity measures sinking deeper and deeper into recession. According to the latest estimates, Greek GDP would drop this year by 4 percent. That complicates efforts of Greece’s government to reduce deficit of the country’s GDP from 13.6 to 8.1 percent. Greece, which agreed to unprecedented austerity cuts in pensions, public sector pay and a sale tax hike in return for a 110-billion-euro rescue package, will probably need more money. As Greek newspaper Ta Nea informed last weekend, representatives of the European Union consider swelling financial help to Athens beyond the terms of arranged package. Some economists warn that Greece could in the coming years be forced to restructure its debts, which would likely cause considerable economic damage not only in the country itself, but also in the broader eurozone. Papandreou’s reaction to the possible new austerity measures was equally uncertain as Papandreou himself: “! as long as the economy does well, no new measures are needed.&! #8221;

Before elections
by Milota Sidorova

Six weeks before elections make significant differences in politician speeches. This period finds them vulnerable and test their ability to move the masses. What may be kind of negative perspective is that the whole policy of a party may be embodied by one person. In the U.S. in this time it is clearly President Barack Obama who has become a mascot for Democratic party. And since the mood before elections is tight and Democrats are the ruling party, much is at the stake. Rushing and willing for money and supporters Obama set out on a journey through several states to improve positions for Democratic candidates. But basically Democrats are in tough situation – while ! they have to defend their promises and deeds and keep talking about improving economy, Republicans who wow to do better seem to take a better piece of a cake. They have to just opose and criticize past actions. And they keep doing that. On Thursday they were going to release 20-point program considering the most important topics – jobs, spending, health care. Economy and unemploymet however, play leading roles in campaign talks and president Obama acknowledged that. Talking anything but these topics would make him look out of touch with people. So he uses all his rhetory that has been a key factor of his success during presidential campaign. Democrats are fighting for recent majority in both Congress levels and easier passage for their proposals. One is sure, they rise or fall will be joined and perhaps caused by president himself.

US: jobless claims fall
by Barbora Misakova

It is only September and I am listening to “I am dreaming of a white Christmas”. Older I am, more I look forward to this unique time of a season. Glittering Christmas tree, plenty of gifts under it and full house – that is the picture I am carrying in my head whole year. But is there really a reason for joy? For those ones with no job and income any sight of Christmas must be depressing. But there is still a hope, at least for those who live in the US. Hope for recovery of its economy is higher. According to Thursday’s news, new unemployment benefit claims fell to a two-month low. Also the trade deficit for July shrank by 14 percent, what is a hopefu! l sign for the stuttering economic recovery. David Sloan, an economist at 4CAST in New York said: “We were expecting that things would slow down in the third quarter and start to pick up in the fourth quarter, but now it seems like the slowdown in the third quarter wasn’t as severe as we feared.” While market expectations for state unemployment benefits were hovering around 470,000, drop of 27,000 was a pleasant surprise for the Labor Department. Together with the $4.5 billion trade deficit shrank, the Thursday’s report helped to calm fears a little bit. Great news is that private employers added 67,000 jobs in August, while prior month’s numbers were revised to show 36,000 more jobs created than previously reported. Well, maybe this year’s Christmas will be afterward white for everyone!

Proposed Citi settlement is fair
by Barbora Misakova

When the crisis hit, first of all we thought about money. What else should we think about? United States had a lot to do to save its banks from bankruptcy. New-York based Citigropu was one of the hardest-hit banks during this financial crisis. That was also the reason why it received $45 billion from the $700 billion financial bailout. This amount was among the largest of the government rescues. In December, Citibank repaid $20 billion of the bailout and the other $25 billion was converted to a government ownership stake, which the government has said it will sell by the end of this year. But Citibank is on the carpet again. This time the question of “fair and adequat! e” punishment of Citigroup Inc. is relevant. Citigroup Inc., which misled investors about billions in potential losses from subprime mortgages, got from government penalty of $75 million. The third-largest U.S. bank was accused of repeatedly making misleading statements in calls with analysts and regulatory filings about the extent of its holding tied to high-risk mortgages. The SEC announced the settlement of unintentional civil fraud charges in late July, but U.S. District Court Judge Ellen Segal Huvelle, who said last month she was “baffled” by the proposed settlement, was not ready to approve it without more information. The Securities and Exchange Commission made its case in a filing Wednesday and said the $75 million penalty is “fair, adequate, reasonable and in the public interest.” The SEC also said that the proposed $75 million fine also fully conforms with the agency’s guidance for corporate penalties and was based on an economi! c analysis of Citigroup’s estimated gain.

Unemployment still eats the US economy
by Zivka Deleva

Status Quo might be the right word for us to use on the subject of the US actual economical situation. OK, the unemployment seems already controlled, but not decreased. Some industries note improvement, but that still is not very enough for the country to get back on the terra firma. Now, the most important state institution concerned about the financial policy making is in trouble, doesn’t knowing what is the best pattern that the country should have? The Federal Reserve is the one that decides whether the state should help the bank system, which is one of the most important backbones in the economy in each country, especially the United States of America. As far as ! the Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke is concerned, he would give hand to any institution that needs a hand, having packages prepared. He has been the one that felt the most on his back, being responsible for the financial packages that helped the banks to return to life again. But, what will that mean but new debts for the Government, which already is enough debt-ridden. New numbers say that the employment is already improved, especially in the private hiring system, which according to my modest knowledge in economics, should be a good thing, because those are the people that create, produce, and not the once employed in the governmental administration. The analysts are the most worried about the fact that the unemployment diminishes very slowly and that is not enough for the country to completely come out of the terrible recession. The highest level of the unemployment happened last October, with the 10.1 percent. This August it noted a downturn for 0.5 percent. One of the measu! res that the State is planning to do is going to be the bigger! provoca tion of the employers to hire people, by tax cuts, of course. Good luck, America!
